It’s Time For Our Father’s Day Brunch!

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

Fathers, how do we love thee? Let us count the ways.

  1. You changed our diapers. That’s a biggie.
  2. You taught us how to say “Dada,” and then immediately started working on “Peek-a-Boo.”
  3. You picked us up when we skinned our knees, and helped us know that everything would be ok.
  4. You held our hand when we were too scared to step onto our first escalator.
  5. You helped us catch our first lightning bug, giving us our first glimpse of the wonders of the universe.
  6. You taught us how to ride our bike without training wheels. It was terrifying, and we were pretty sure the bike was trying to kill us, but your steady presence reassured us, and eventually we mastered it.
  7. You took us to our first baseball game, and caught us our first foul ball, instilling in us a never-dying, all-consuming love of the Atlanta Braves.
  8. You took us on fishing trips, and graciously baited the hook with the icky worm for us.
  9. When we were learning to swim, you stood in the deep end and encouraged us to jump into your waiting arms. We were certain our floaties and duck intertube would let us down, but we never doubted your strong hands as they reached up to meet us as we hurdled through the air.
  10. You patiently listened to us as we explained all the wonderful qualities of our first crush, and then sincerely offered to “visit” that crush when they made us cry.
  11. You attended all our little league football games and raced down the sideline as we careened down the field on our highlight-reel touchdown run.
  12. You helped us figure out those ridiculous math problems that began with “John has 28 bananas…” as if a person would ever walk around with 28 bananas.
  13. When we invited all our friends over to get ready for senior prom, you anxiously waited downstairs with the camera. And when our date showed up, nervous and sweaty-palmed, you tried not to look too intimidating as you told him you expected us home by curfew.
  14. On our graduation day, you told us you had cut some onions earlier that day, and that you couldn’t be more proud of us.
  15. On our wedding day, you smiled and told us how pretty we looked, and then you kissed us on the cheek and asked if we were ready.
  16. When we proudly pointed out our newborn son in the nursery, and you assured us he would grow up to be a great man like his father.
  17. When our toddlers were driving us insane, you offered to take them for the weekend. And even though we knew you’d feed them Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs, we were grateful to have a couple nights to ourselves.
  18. When our daughter discovered nail polish, you chatted about unicorns and fairies as she gave you the worst manicure you’ve ever seen. Bright neon pink with glitter really isn’t really your color, but we admire you for beaming at her amazing nail-painting skills.
  19. When it became difficult for you to run around with our kids, we enjoyed sitting on the rockers on the front porch with you, eating a grapefruit and sipping coffee, reminiscing about our own childhood.
  20. Mostly we love you because you helped make us who we are today.
So here’s to you, dad! Happy Father’s Day!!

Have You Heard About Our Wine Cruises?

Monday, June 3rd, 2013

Picture it: you’re on a yacht cruising around Lake Lanier with your best friends (or your significant other, or your parents, or yourself, you know whoever), and you’re at a elegantly set table on the top deck, with a light breeze in your hair. The sky is a beautiful cobalt blue and white fluffy clouds line up on the horizon. A waitress appears by your side holding a platter of Gorgonzola stuffed strawberries.

And then a waiter appears on your other side and pours you a fizzy glass of Lamarca – a Prosecco from Italy. Can life get better? Actually it can. Because on our wine cruises, you get to taste six wines – each paired with a gourmet specialty! In addition to fresh strawberries, our first course included grapes, blueberries, dates, assorted nuts, cheddar, smoked Gouda, Swiss, and Pepperjack cheeses.

After guests were nice and settled, our waiters and waitresses cleared plates and began the next course: Lamb Lollypops with a raspberry gastrique sauce. Really they should have just called it Lamb Pops with Awesome Sauce. Interestingly, the raspberry gastrique really pulled out the fruitiness of the traditionally earthy, peppery Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand.

Our third course consisted of incredibly delicious smoked salmon mousse crostini, which paired very nicely with a buttery Chardonnay from William Hill in the Napa Valley.

A bit of an interesting side note here – we experienced a Lake Lanier Islands first when a small group of our guests were a bit late and watched the Island Princess pull away from the dock. Never fearing a small crisis, our Harbor Master acted quickly and masterminded a mid-lake rendezvous with the Princess that even Michael Bay would be impressed by! Our tardy guests were then seated and served and the cruise continued as smoothly as if they had been aboard the whole time. Wow!

Fourth up was a sweet and fruity Rose from Spain: Las Rocas, which was served with a rather intimidating but delectable dish of barbecued Langoustines. Guests were hesitant at first, because really, how in the world do you eat these things? But with some instruction from our crew it quickly became one of the favorites. The spicy skewers really enhanced the sweetness of the Rose!

For our fifth course, our wonderful Chef Melody personally glazed the caramelized onion Consommé Boules with lemon crème fraîche. Our blogger doesn’t know how to pronounce it, so it’s obviously delicious! Essentially, they were mini French Onion Soup bowls, and they were so good.

These were paired with a dry Mac Murray Pinot Noir from the Russian River Sonoma Country.

We polished off the night with our sixth and final course: spiced duck confit served on crispy thin flatbread. The duck was pleasantly flavorful, and happily lacked that gamey toughness that sometimes happens with duck courses. Our chefs know their way around a duck confit!

We served an Alamos Malbec from the Mendoza region of Argentina with this dish, and this bold and spicy red was a great way to finish off the evening.

As we cruised back into Harbor Landing, guests were treated to trays of dessert featuring mini éclair, passion fruit cream puffs, truffles, macaroons, pralines, and assorted fresh berries.

Even with the storms growing in the distance, it was a perfect afternoon with great food and wine, and family and friends! We celebrated three birthdays, and enjoyed a very pleasant and smooth cruise. We hope to see you on our next Wine Cruise, on June 30!

Special thanks to our crew and kitchen staff who did an AMAZING job!! Way to go guys!!!

All About Those New Access Passes!

Saturday, June 1st, 2013

Today it’s all about clearing up any confusion you may have about our new Access Passes! We know this new structure might be a little tough to handle at first, but our friendly and professional staff is here for you, and we’re going to make this smooth like silk.

First of all, why is Lake Lanier implementing this new charge?

Well, based on your feedback, we’ve implemented a variety of improvements at LanierWorld that we are super pumped about. We have now completed the implementation phase, and it’s time for us begin including these awesome new features in our standard access fares. What are these new features, you ask?

We have new, more, and better entertainment! Every single day at LanierWorld we’re featuring at least one band, and often up to THREE! All over the park!! Seriously, our entertainment schedule is jam packed with rad bands, both famous and local. PLUS, we’re offering totally NEW things like the Fun Patrol and interactive kids’ entertainment!

We have extensive new food and beverage options, from all new Boardwalk dining to Bullfrog’s little cousin Tad’s! Have you ever had a Walking Taco? Try it at the Sunset Cantina on Boardwalk! Want to order pizza from Gianni’s and eat it on your boat? Order through your mobile device! Chill out by the Dockside Bar and enjoy patio dining or take your drink down to the beach!

Speaking of dockside, we’ve poured a ton of effort into renovating our Sunset Cove and Big Beach Docks. Be sure to check them out, they’re simply fantastic!

Still speaking of Dockside, you may have noticed our most obvious addition: The Boardwalk, where the Lakeside Entertainment District comes alive! There are tons of dining options just in this strip, PLUS our new Ferris wheel, carnival games, FunTime entertainment, and patio dining!

Furthermore, thanks to popular demand, we’ve extended Big Beach and pulled in even more umbrellas and beach chairs for rental, AND completely renovated and upgraded our bathrooms! For real you guys, Princess Kate would even use these things. They’re that nice.

Here are the 2 Access Only Pass options, each $10 per person, not including kids age 6 and under:

Option 1: Daily Dining, Retail, and Spa Access

Stroll up, buy the $10 Option One Access Pass, and we’ll immediately give you a $10 voucher that is good towards Dining/Food concessions, any of our retail shops, or our new Tranquility on the Water Spa in LanierWorld. This option DOES NOT INCLUDE Beach Access, and is valid ONLY on the day of entry.

Option 2: Daily Beach Access

Stroll up, buy the $10 Option Two Access Pass, and you get all day access to the beach, umbrellas, and beach chairs (which are first come, first serve). You ALSO get access to all our Boardwalk games and Ferris wheel, the volleyball courts, Sunset Cove and Big Beach restaurants, non-lifeguarded swim areas, AND Lakeside Links Minigolf. That is A LOT of things! This option DOES NOT INCLUDE the voucher from Option 1.

       Download our Admission Guide

Now, we know everyone will have specific questions, so we’re going to try to answer a few of those here today in, you guessed it!, HYPOTHETICAL SCENARIO TIME!!

Access Only Pass Scenarios:

You get off your awesome boat and say, “I don’t like sand in my shorts – I only want to go to the Sunset Cove Beach Cafe & Club to eat.”

Your best option is Option 1.

You get off your awesome boat and say, “I want to enjoy the beach all day, I LOVE building sandcastles!”

If you come more than 3 times per year, then we recommend the SEASON Beach Pass, not the Daily Beach Access PassThe SEASON Beach Pass is $35 and includes ALL the DAILY Beach Pass features, but it’s valid for the whole season, which is May-September.

If you’re just visiting today, then Option 2 is best for you.

You’re walking around the beach, and you’ve, um, “forgotten” to purchase a Beach Pass:

One of our nice staff members will approach you and say, “I notice you aren’t wearing a Beach Access wristband, would you like to purchase one now? Let me direct you to the nearest purchasing booth.”

But you’re all like “I don’t want to pay for this.”

Since we’ve finished implementing all those amazing new things you saw earlier, our beach is now for patrons only. It’s cool if you want to pull up in your boat and hang out, but we’ve got a pristine beach to maintain, and if you want to use it, we need everyone to do their part – even if it is just pitching in $10 per person.

You get off your awesome boat and say, “I just want to get a drink.”

Are you planning on eating, too? If so, then Option 1 is best for you – it includes a food and retail voucher.

If you aren’t planning on eating, then Option 2 is best – it includes beach access so you can relax on the beach while you enjoy your beverage.

You get off your awesome boat and say, “My kids just want to play on the beach and build sandcastles – I’d rather just stay on my awesome boat.”

Option 2 is best for you. We do require that kids under 12 be accompanied by an adult chaperone, though. Even though kids walk around our park all day without their parents holding their hands, our beach is not patrolled by lifeguards like our waterpark is. For your kids’ safety, we’re counting on you as a responsible and super cool chaperone to help them build that rad sandcastle and just keep an eye on them while they’re on the beach.

You’re thinking to yourself right now, “I read/heard last week that I get a voucher when I purchase an Access Pass…”

You are describing Option 1.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to call us up at (770) 945-8787 or visit us online at www.lanierworld.com.

It’s Hypothetical Scenario Time! Your Auntie Muriel wants you to come over and look at her cat pictures for the day. She says “tomorrow?” with those watery brown eyes magnified by her Coke-bottle-glasses. What do you say?!

Here’s what you say! “Auntie Muriel, I love your 17 cats with all my heart, and I want Mr. Whiskerpants to be my Best Man when I get married, but I have a better idea! Instead of sitting in your dark, musty house, let’s go outside in the sunshine at LanierWorld all year long!”

REEL SERIOUS: Weekend Fishing Report

Friday, May 24th, 2013

WEEKEND FISHING REPORT:

Now I have to be reel with you guys (see what we did there?). We pulled these reports from our good friends over at Have Fun Fishing, who update weekly. They post on Thursdays, ostensibly because you serious fishing fellows tend to fish on the weekends. So we’re going to do that, too, except we’re aiming for Fridays.

www.jimboonlanier.com 770 642 7764

Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena of Big Fish On Service, 404 561 2564. www.bigfishon.com

LAKE LANIER IS UP 2.41 FEET, THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR AND THE CREEKS ARE SLIGHTLY STAINED AND & 71 DEGREES

This Lake Lanier Bass report is from Jimbo Mathley. www.jimboonlanier.com 770 642 7764

Bass fishing is fair. The fishing this past week has improved a good deal and we are now having consistently good catches each day. Based on the recent activity, it looks like we will have several fish spawn on the full moon coming up this week, particularly those fish on and around the main lake. For numbers, a 3/16 ounce Shaky Head worm as well as a fluke around humps and reef poles in creeks and on the main lake is working well. Also, the wake bait has been good for a number of fish each day, particularly in the morning. The top water bite in general however has been rather sporadic this week, but the fluke and jerk bait continue to shine when the fish will not come up all the way for a surface bait. Those shallow humps and reef poles are also starting to produce some quality fish as well. We have had several fish in the 4 pound class, and we are catching a good mixture of pre and post spawn fish. I have May 29 and 30th open next week, and I am booking for June as well. Give me a call and let’s go fish.

This Lake Lanier Striper report is from Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena of Big Fish On Service 404 561 2564. www.bigfishon.com

Striper fishing is good. This is a great time to take kids fishing. There is plenty of action with spotted bass, catfish and stripers biting while pulling herring. Keep a fresh bait on every 20 minutes. The fish have been on points with deep water nearby and clay banks off the river channel. The primary technique remains free lines with herring deployed 100 feet behind the boat and 50 feet behind your planner boards. Free lines with a single split shot out fished the un weighted lines this week. Add weight to a couple of your lines as the day progresses and vary your speed form .5 mph to 1 mph. We are casting a Captain Mack’s buck tail jig with a small fluke to points and picking up a few spotted bass while we are pulling baits. The top water bite continues to be slow. The umbrella rig is working. We use a 3 ounce umbrella with 9, 1 ounce Jigs with shad bodies 90 to 120 feet back for deep water trolling and 1 ounce umbrella with 9, 1/2 ounce jigs 50 to 70 feet back for shallow water applications. One day white shad bodies are working better than chartreuse and the next day chartreuse works better than white. Start each day with one white and one chartreuse rig and let the fish tell you which one they prefer. The fish are post spawn and moving. The key is to cover as much water as possible with a focus on points. The North end and mid lake is working better than the South end. Call Ken Sturdivant about the ON THE WATER SCHOOLS for SONAR and Rods Reels and Lures for Bass or a full day STRIPERS School. Call 770 889 2654 for details.

Lake Lanier Focuses on Boat Safety

Monday, May 20th, 2013

CBS Atlanta came out this weekend to cover a boating safety event at Sunset Cove, one of our premier hotspots on the lake. Lake Lanier officials hosted the event to promote awareness of two law changes for boaters.

First, the blood alcohol content for boat drivers has been lowered from .1 to .08, which is the same level for drivers on land.

“From .08 to .1 is a big jump in the level of impairment so it will be really nice to have that law consistent with what we have on the highway,” said Jason Roberson with the Department of Natural Resources.

If you’re planning on partying on the lake, then plan on a designated captain as well.

Second, kids up to age 13 are required to wear a life jacket. That’s up from the old law, wear kids up to 10 had to wear them.

This one is important, too, according to Gabriela Panasiuk of West Marine, because “Even at the age of 13 you really aren’t a fantastic swimmer. You don’t have lung capacity to hold breath for a very long time. You don’t really have the strength to swim to shore if you needed to.”

The safety event also covered refresher topics like applying adequate sunscreen, boat maintenance, and keeping safe distance between boats.

“We’re reminding people of the 100 foot rule. It seems simple, but you would be surprised how many people violate it. If people would just stay a hundred feet away from stationary objects and people in the water it would solve a lot of problems here,” said Joanna Cloud with the Lake Lanier Association.

So stay safe out there, boaters! Designate a captain, keep that blood alcohol content below .08, wear those life jackets, apply that sunscreen, keep those boats up to code, and remember the 100 foot rule!

To read more about the event, check out CBS Atlanta’s story here.
