Riley Biederer Plays at Sunset Cove Opening

Monday, February 24th, 2014

It was a beautiful opening weekend for Sunset Cove, the beach cafe and club situated on the beach here at Lake Lanier Islands. The sun was shining, the wind was quiet, and the food was phenomenal! And to top it all off, local favorite Riley Biederer brought the music as the sun began to sink into the Lake. Yes sir, good times at Sunset Cove! It’s only the beginning, too. We’ve kicked off the summer THREE MONTHS early because we’re tired of winter! So we enclosed the restaurant (with these pretty awesome roll-up doors so it can be open in the summer), lit up the fireplace, and turned on the lights so we could hang out with you guys year-round! How about we take a look at what went down this weekend?

Boaters started to arrive pretty early.

The fireplace was roaring!

Overall, a great evening!

The grilled shrimp appetizer.

Riley Biederer was seriously rockin’ the Sunset Stage!

Sunset Cove Beach Cafe & Club is now open weekends! So come on out and enjoy a great atmosphere and delicious food!

Lake Lanier hosted its last Full Moon Party of the season, and boy was it a doozy! But enough yammering on, let’s get to the pictures already!!

The 2013 Aquapalooza Olympic Games

Friday, August 2nd, 2013

It was an epic year for the Aquapalooza Olympic Games, with well over 50 participants young and old! Held at Big Beach just after lunch time, the Aquapalooza staff made sure the teams were even and began doling out identifying handkerchiefs.

Kicking off round one, the Dizzy Izzy: a relay race not for the faint of heart, or balance. Contenders needed to spin around the bat three times before sprinting down to a cone and back to tag the next person in line.

Invariably, the adults had a tougher time of it than the kids. We think the slanted beach had something to do with that…

Round Two: Teams send one player at a time with a tiny shovel full of water down the beach to fill up a bucket until time ran out. The team with the most water in their bucket would be declared the winners!

Orange Team won the Bucket Run! They were really excited!

The third round was the classic Water Balloon Toss. Proceed to party:

After some minor controversy, Red Team was declared the winner!

For round four, teams were asked to sit in a line and pass flour by the handful over their shoulders, down the line, and into a bucket. This event was by far the messiest, and probably also the most fun.

While waiting for the buckets to be judged, some of the contenders needed a little help getting the flour cleaned off.

And finally, Black Team was declared victorious! Not that these kids cared:

After a quick wash in the lake to get the rest of the flour off, it was time for the Final Round: the Blindfolded Kayak Race!

And Red Team won the Kayak Race!! Interestingly, there was a 3-way tie for first place after the last event, so, after a quick consultation with team captains, a final tie-breaker round was announced. 3 Kayaks, across the lake and back, winner takes all. IT. WAS. EPIC.

Red Team had already proved its finesse in the Blindfolded Kayak Race, and true to form, they won the speed race as well. Therefore it is with great honor and pride that we announce the Gold Medalists in the 2013 Aquapalooza Olympic Games: RED TEAM!!! Congratulations!! And thank you to everyone who participated! We can hardly wait for next year – better start training!

Islands “Give Back Thursdays” Are Back!!

Monday, July 29th, 2013

Hey everyone! We’re coming up on our last couple of weeks of LanierWorld weekly fun, and we wanted to finish off the summer with enthusiasm! That’s why we’re very pleased and excited to announce the comeback of “Give Back Thursdays” for August 1st and 8th. You guys did such an amazing job of bringing in canned foods and donations in June (635 cans in just a couple hours!!) that we can’t wait to see what you’ll do for GoodWill in August!!

Those were just a FRACTION of the cans y’all brought in last time, and the Harvest House was extremely grateful to all you do-gooders. And so were we! It was a great month for a great cause! But now we’re ready for the next operation!

All you need to do is bring in a bag of your gently used clothes, and you’ll receive HALF OFF your All Attractions Daily Access Pass!! What was $35 for an adult or child over 42″ would only be $17.50 with a bag of your old clothes that you don’t wear anyway!

Summer is nearing its end and we’re teaming up with Goodwill of North Georgia for this series of “Give Back Thursdays.”  Once again, bring a bag of donations to Lanier World on Thursday, August 1st or 8th (This Thursday and the next Thursday) and in addition to helping put people to work in your community, you’ll receive half off admission to Lanier World.  A bag of your gently used items for half off a day of summer fun at Lanier World. That sounds like a deal to us!!

So bring your denim jackets, your sequin purses, your golf tournament tshirts, and your socks that you got for Christmas from Grandma and never wore because you’re an 18-year old guy and snowflakes and penguins just aren’t your style! Put it all in a bag – stuff it full – and bring on down to the water park for a full day at half-price!

God bless you all, you citizens of great charity! We love you to pieces!

AQUAPALOOZA 2013!!

Friday, July 26th, 2013

Wave your hands in the air if you feel fine! We’re gonna take it into overtime! Welcome to Aquapalooza!

Sponsored by MarineMax and Sea Ray, Aquapalooza 2013 is going to be a blast this year! In addition to the normal awesomesauce that happens at LanierWorld (water park, mini golf, floating spa, cable park, paddleboards, Boardwalk, etc.), Aquapalooza brings you a ton of great beach games and contests to really make the day amazing. We’ve got bands, volleyball, and cornhole, to name a few things. We’ve got a kids’ and non-kids Hula Hoop competition on the beach! We’ve got the Beach Olympics at Big Beach.B.C. Band, the Digits, and local favorite Riley Biederer all playing around the park. Finally our Big Beach party kicks off with Haywire headlining! Can you even BELIEVE how much fun this is going to be?! And we’ll be there to document the whole thing! Be sure to say hello to our photographers if you see them!

Upon entering Sunset Cove, turn your VHF radio to Channel 72. Look for the boats marked with Sea Ray and MarineMax Flags and team members wearing staff shirts to help direct you to a safe and secure anchorage spot. Please be extremely careful as there will be hundreds of boats in the cove. Be sure to come to the registration desk to sign in.

Wave down or radio a MarineMax Water Taxi to get to shore and enjoy the Water Park and Beach activities. You will still need to purchase a Beach Access Pass which is $10.00/person. We will have live entertainment throughout the day, beach activities, and contests. MarineMax will be giving away AquaPalooza T-shirts throughout the day along with other prizes! For those of you who do not receive a T-shirt, MarineMax will have them on sale at their Buford and Cumming locations for only $5.00 while supplies last! T-SHIRTS ARE THE BEST!!

MarineMax will be sending an email with the activity line up for the day of the event, but in the mean time, check out the schedule below.

Also, MarineMax Staff will be monitoring Channel 72 on your VHF radio the entire weekend for questions.

Those of you coming by car will need to pay the $10 gate fee at the main gate. Follow the signs to park at Grand Hall and walk towards the Sunset Cove restaurant to the registration table. Before you enter LanierWorld, you’ll be able to purchase one of our access only passes, or an all attractions pass at the gate. Top 10 Lakeside Songs of Summer

Thursday, July 18th, 2013

“No shoes, No shirt, No problems
Blues what blues..hey I forgot them
The sun and the sand and a drink in my hand with no bottom
and no shoes, no shirt, and no problems!”

Kenny Chesney might have phrased it best, but where he likes Mexico, we like Lake Lanier! There really is nothing better than relaxing on the beach with your toes in the sand, listening to some great country music!! And that’s just what we’ll be doing here on Saturday, when 94.9 The Bull sets up shop at LanierWorld from 1-3pm! In honor of that glorious time, we’ve put together a very specific list of our Top 10 Lakeside Songs of Summer, are you ready?? Here we go:

10. We’re starting off with “Summertime Blues,” Eddie Cochran’s Rockabilly classic from 1958. Alan Jackson brought this song back to the top in 1994, and it’s been covered by a ton of artists including the Beach Boys, The Who, Bruce Springsteen, and even Joan Jett! We gave it our last spot because Summer’s already down one month and it kind of is giving us the blues.

9. We’re giving the #9 slot to Jake Owen’s “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” because this is what summer on the lake is all about! “A full moon shinin’ bright, edge of the water; we were feelin’ alright”

8. Tim McGraw’s “Something Like That” is the 8 seed. We love this song in particular because it reminds us of hanging out at the Stone Mountain Laser Show back in the day. Remember that song on the mountain? With that cute kid and the barbeque stain on his white t-shirt? That was great.

7. Zac Brown Band is next with “Toes,” a song all about what we love down at Big Beach and Sunset Cove! Toes in the water, toes in the sand, no worries in the world, cold beers in people’s hands. It wouldn’t hurt to win the lottery either… Life is good today, Zac Brown Band! Thanks to you!

6. The #6 spot on our list goes to Luke Bryan and his super-fun-to-dance-like-a-crazy-person song “Country Girl (Shake It For Me)” because really, this song is SO FUN TO DANCE TO.

5. “Summertime” by Kenny Chesney gets our next slot. We love him so much we gave away some tickets just last week to his upcoming “No Shoes Nation” concert!

4. The #4 spot goes to the one and only Don Henley and “Boys of Summer.” After Henley took a break from drumming and singing for The Eagles, he released this song in 1984 which won him a grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Although The Eagles and Henley have walked the tightrope between rock and country for years, we’re thinking that a song about past relationships, growing up, and summer love is right in line with your typical country summer anthem.

3. Rascal Flatts “Summer Nights” gets the third spot in our list purely for the awesome factor of their music video. That looks like one fun party to us.

2. His name is Kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid Rock! In 2008, “All Summer Long” netted Kid Rock his first Top-10 Country hit ever! This incredible Southern summer anthem actually began as a mashup of Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London” and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s classic “Sweet Home Alabama,” which you can easily make out in the chorus vocals and guitar riffs.

And finally…

1. Of COURSE we’re going to go with a lake-centric, chill, totally fun song for the #1 Top Lakeside Song of Summer!! We picked “Pontoon” by Little Big Town! Can’t you just picture yourself chillin’ on a deck chair on your pontoon, a drink from the Tiki Hut in hand, and watchin’ the crew play some volleyball at Sunset Cove? We can’t think of any song that better personifies Summer on Lake Lanier than this one!

What about you? What are your top 10 summer songs? Feel free to leave them in the comment section!
